Social media has become such a huge part of our lives that it engulfs us and we tend to lose ourselves in it. For example, have you ever decided to “check your Facebook real quick” and then three hours later realize that you’ve wasted those three hours just scrolling through the newsfeed? It’s hard to take your eyes off of the screen, I know, but when you have a business, you cannot let yourself get taken away by social media.

I’m not saying that social media isn’t good for your business, because it is. Social media is one of the best ways to promote your business, BUT you must do it the right way for it to be effective for you.

First of all, when you are trying to earn new customers and business partners through social media, you don’t want to constantly post about your business. Your goal is to build relationships with new people. Gain their trust and become their friend. This will open a door for you to then promote your business to them. Instead of spending your days sharing photos you see in your newsfeed, how about you use the search bar and look for new people to meet. Search groups that pertain to your business and begin interacting with people.

Another important thing to realize is that not everyone is sitting behind his or her computer all day everyday. People work, take care of their children, go to school, etc. so it’s best for you to take time out of your day to meet people and socialize that way too. If you really want to build lasting relationships spend time with people in person. The bonds created in person strengthen the online experience and relationships.  If you can’t meet in person try spending some time on Skype or a Google+ hangout.  The face time helps to build trust and credibility.

So, social media can either make or break your business. Don’t rely solely on posting fifteen times a day on every social media site and every post being about your business. That will destroy you. Your goal is to meet new people, interact with them, and build a relationship with them. This will give you the results you’ve been looking for.
